Take a Lokal Vacation in Brooklyn

April 22nd, 2009 · 2 Comments · Bloody Mary, Brooklyn, Eggs and Omelettes, Outside Seating, Prix Fixe

This is a guest post from AfterHoursBrooklyn, a blog about having fun (and eating well) in Brooklyn. Enjoy!

As a Prospect Park Brooklynite and regular brunchster it takes quite a bit to get me on a subway to anywhere on Sundays – the options are just too numerous right around the corner. I was, however, forced to make an exception when some friends in Williamsburg insisted that I try their favorite local place. Struggling through a painfully early subway ride (1 PM), I wondered if any brunch experience was worth a morning commute. Little did I know I was on the G train to brunch nirvana.

Lokal, a Mediterranean restaurant across the street from McCarran Park, is an open and airy island vacation paradise. The multi-colored stained glass window walls are pulled back in good weather to create a sense of community with the street and the park. Spacious and bright, not a single electric light is needed during brunch hours, as natural sunlight provides all of the warmth and illumination. Bright blue and orange walls decorated with seashells, sand and glass add to the aura of sun and sea.

Arriving around 1:30 PM, our party of six waited for about 15 minutes to be seated. Obviously a neighborhood favorite, Lokal remained busy throughout the duration of our two hour stay.

The $11.50 prix fixe brunch menu includes coffee, juice and generous portion size. My White Spinach Omelet was excellent and served with yummy spiced home potatoes. Table’s selections included Eggs Benedict, Eggs Florentine and Smoked Salmon with Scrambled Eggs, which were all met with rave reviews. The service, although friendly, was incredibly slow and unpredictable. Good thing we were hardly in a rush to leave.

Drinking our way through several rounds of fantastic Bloody Mary’s, well priced at $4 a piece, each of us at one point or another remarked upon how absolutely relaxed the restaurant made us feel. With summer around the corner, Lokal is the perfect place to brunch on a sunny day when all you have is time and all you want is a bit of vacation.
