As a Manahattanite, it’s rare for me to leave the island for brunch. I’ll make the trek to Brooklyn or Queens on a rare occasion, but the plethora of great brunch spots in this city makes it too easy to stay within my lower Manhattan bubble on most weekends.
That said, I recently came across a blog called The Hoboken Guy written by, you guessed it, a Hoboken guy. His mission is to find the very best of everything that the mile square has to offer and he’s currently on a quest to find the best Hoboken brunch.
Like any established bruncher, he’s found some awesome dishes like Buskers’ Crab Cake Benedict and La Isla’s Stuffed French Toast. But it’s the Gaslight Manmosas, yes Manmosas, that may actually get me to cross the Hudson for brunch.
The Manmosa, a pint glass filled with a mix of Blue Moon, orange juice and a shot of mandarin vodka, sounds like the ultimate brunch beverage that won’t hamper your manliness. I imagine Blue Moon, a citrusy, unfiltered wheat beer traditionally garnished with an orange slice, is the perfect base for the orange juice and vodka. Well, it certainly looks delicious.
Hoboken guy rated the Manmosa 4/5 on taste and a 5/5 on drinkability, but he wouldn’t consider the brunch food at Gaslight to be anything extraordinary. Even so, the $15 prix fixe brunch deal appears to be quite a steal for an entree, complimentary fruit, a basket of muffins and 2 complimentary drinks.
Other venues, according to Hoboken guy, have their own variations of the manmosa replacing Blue Moon with PBR or High Life. Although intriguing, those seem more like recipes to make your machismo happy rather than your taste buds.
When I make the trek out to Hoboken I want the real Manmosas, so I’ll be heading to Gaslight.
